Abortion is legal in the UK under the Abortion Act 1967. It should be as simple as going to your GP for a referral to your local family planning clinic, where an abortion will be provided for free under the NHS. However, sometimes a private abortion is more suitable for someone’s circumstances – for instance for people travelling outside the UK. BPAS Glasgow at The Sandyford Initiative in Glasgow (2-6 Sandyford Place, G3 7NB) offers a discount price for Irish people seeking abortion services, starting at £415 for the pills mifepristone and misoprostol for those under 10 weeks pregnant*.
In many cases both the necessary medical consultation and the abortion treatment itself can be given on the same day. Contraceptives and counselling services are also available. For more information check out http://www.bpas.ie or call the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) on 03457 30 40 30.
*If travel is not possible, and you live somewhere where abortion is illegal, email info@womenonweb.org to obtain these pills through the post for a small fee.
